Screenflex Portable Room Dividers ~ The School Gymnasium Classroom Solution
Since the No Child Left Behind Act was signed into law in January 2002, there has been much debate over the value of standardized testing. The Act mandated annual testing for students in 3-8 grades as well as 10th grade in reading and math and eventually science. The objective for standardized testing was to have an objective method to measure student’s growth across state lines. Because this was a government mandate school districts struggled to gather funding for the testing and needed to find adequate testing space for all students taking the test simultaneously. Schools also faced the risk of losing government funding dollars if they failed to raise all student test scores to meet the “proficiency” level. Something school districts found was unattainable. This, along with President Obama’s mandate of tying teacher evaluations to test scores, has forced educators to “teach to the test”. “Teaching to the test” narrows the curriculum taught in the classroom and eliminates the students ability to think creatively. While the debate continues surrounding standardized testing, we must think of the outcome standardized testing will have on the students’ ability to problem solve and to be future leaders of America.
